Contain This, Unleashing Docker for HPC
نویسندگان
چکیده
Containers are a lightweight virtualization method for running multiple isolated Linux systems under a common host operating system. Container-based computing is revolutionizing the way applications are developed and deployed. A new ecosystem has emerged around the Docker platform to enable container based computing. However, this revolution has yet to reach the HPC community. In this paper, we provide background on Linux Containers and Docker, and how they can be of value to the scientific and HPC community. We will explain some of the use cases that motivate the need for user defined images and the uses of Docker. We will describe early work in deploying and integrating Docker into an HPC environment, and some of the pitfalls and challenges we encountered. We will discuss some of the security implications of using Docker and how we have addressed those for a shared user system typical of HPC centers. We will also provide performance measurements to illustrate the low overhead of containers. While our early work has been on cluster-based/CS-series systems, we will describe some preliminary assessment of supporting Docker on Cray XC series supercomputers, and a potential partnership with Cray to explore the feasibility and approaches to using Docker on large systems. متن کاملBuilding a Virtual HPC Cluster with Auto Scaling by the Docker
Solving the software dependency issue under the HPC environment has always been a difficult task for both computing system administrators and application scientists. This work would like to tackle the issue by introducing the modern container technology, the Docker, to be specific. By integrating the auto-scaling feature of service discovery with the light-weight virtualization tool, the Docker...
متن کاملHPC Containers in Use
Linux containers in the commercial world are changing the landscape for application development and deployments. Container technologies are also making inroads into HPC environments, as exemplified by NERSC’s Shifter and LBL’s Singularity. While the first generation of HPC containers offers some of the same benefits as the existing open container frameworks, like CoreOS or Docker, they do not a...
متن کاملTesting Docker Performance for HPC Applications
The main goal for this article is to compare performance penalties when using KVM virtualization and Docker containers for creating isolated environments for HPC applications. The article provides both data obtained using synthetic tests (High Performance Linpack) and real life applications (OpenFOAM). The article highlights the influence on performance of major infrastructure configuration opt...
متن کاملShifter: Fast and consistent HPC workflows using containers
In this work we describe the experiences of building and deploying containers using Docker and Shifter, respectively. We present basic benchmarking tests that show the performance portability of certain workflows as well as performance results from the deployment of widely used nontrivial scientific applications. Furthermore, we discuss the resulting workflows through use cases that cover the c...
